Abstract

Proposed is a new application of EMI suppression. High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps are potential sources of EMI due to their normal method of ignition. A high voltage is used to strike an arc, and then the applied voltage is reduced once an arc is sustained. The ignition phase of the operation can result in electromagnetic radiation to the sharp rise time of the high voltage arc discharge. This is similar to that of the spark plug in an internal combustion gasoline engine. Here it is proposed to use controlled distributed impedance leads to reduce the EMI for a HID lamp in a similar manner to that in an automobile engine.
