Abstract

A television receiving device with recording capability (typically a hard-disk drive and/or an optical disc drive) which can also record the program metadata with the content. The metadata is delivered as part of an electronic program guide (EPG) or can be obtained from other sources like on-line databases. It is equipped with a search engine to find content from a scheduled broadcast (with EPG), recorded contents (in the disk drive) or personal library (in DVD or Blu-ray discs).

Title:

TV Recording Device with a Search Engine

Description of the Invention:

A television receiving device with recording capability (typically a hard-disk drive and/or an optical disc drive) which can also record the program metadata with the content.  The metadata is delivered as part of an electronic program guide (EPG) or can be obtained from other sources like on-line databases.  It is equipped with a search engine to find content from a scheduled broadcast (with EPG), recorded contents (in the disk drive) or personal library (in DVD or Blu-ray discs).

Invention Disclosure:

HDD/DVD recorders can record TV content from broadcast.  The user can get much information from EPG about the content (program) before recording.  However, none of this information is stored with the content.  It is more difficult to find the content that the user is looking for from the recorded library, than from the future broadcast schedule (EPG).  This invention will give users the same amount of information about the recorded contents as the contents on the EPG.

This invention contains the following new and novel features:

  • It stores all the metadata about the particular program (available from the EPG) when it is recorded.  The metadata includes but is not limited to: program title, genre, rating, detailed description, actor/director information, review article, etc.
  • The information (or a link to the information) is added to the internal database.  When the user searches programs to watch using the search engine, this database is also accessed, as well as the regular EPG database.  The user will get the combined result of the search.
  • When the user writes the recorded contents onto the removable media (DVD-R or Blu-Ray disc) and erases the content in the intern...
