Abstract

I. Background A video call over 3G networks is one of the main features provided by all of the 3G network operators. Video call provides a rich call experience to the user. Video calls make use of 3G324M a circuit switched protocol. Normally to make a video call to another user, first user dials the number, and then waits for the call to get connected. While the user is waiting for the call to be connected, first Bearer setup happens, once the bearer setup is successful, 3G324M signaling protocol is invoked. After 3G324M protocol negotiation is completed media (video/audio) is exchanged.

I.  Background

A video call over 3G networks is one of the main features provided by all of the 3G network operators. Video call provides a rich call experience to the user.

Video calls make use of 3G324M a circuit switched protocol. Normally to make a video call to another user, first user dials the number, and then waits for the call to get connected.

While the user is waiting for the call to be connected, first Bearer setup happens, once the bearer setup is successful, 3G324M signaling protocol is invoked. After 3G324M protocol negotiation is completed media (video/audio) is exchanged.

The bearer establishment and 3G324M signaling takes around 4 to 5 seconds, so eventually a user has to wait for around for 4-5 seconds to get the audio, video on his terminal.

As from the network operator’s perspective the video call gets charged once the bearer setup is successful, 3G324M signaling contributes significantly for the call setup time, For the benefit of the user as well as the operator 3G324M signaling time can be reduced there by reducing the video call setup time.

II. Existing solutions

The signaling component of 3G324M protocol is H245, typically H245 signaling would take around 3-4 seconds with NSRP.

To improve H245 signaling Motorola has proposed WNSRP, which is accepted by ITU. WNSRP would reduce the H245 signaling by approximately 1 second. With WNSRP the H245 signaling would be approximately around 2 seconds.

III. New approach - Fast H245 Method

Fast H245 Method mainly focuses on reducing the signaling entities involved thereby reducing the call setup time

TCS (Terminal capability set exchange)

MSD (Master salve determination)

OLC (open logical channel procedures)

MTSE (Multiplex table signaling entity)
