6-ETHYL-4,4-DIMETHYL-2-CYCLOHEXEN-1-ONE: a useful intermediate for a perfuming ingredient

The title compound is a useful starting material for the preparation of 2-ethyl-4,4-dimethyl-1-cyclohexanone (a known perfuming ingredient). The synthesis and the use of the title compound is resumed in the following Scheme:

Scheme 1: reaction path to obtain and use the title compound

The title compound is obtainable by a process involving a Robinson annulation type reaction between 3-ethyl-3-buten-2-one and isobutyraldehyde in the presence of a strong acid.

The hydrogenation into the 2-ethyl-4,4-dimethyl-1-cyclohexanone can be performed in the presence of any catalyst known for such type of reaction (enone into ketone), as for example Pd/C, and at H2 pressures which may vary between 5 to 50 bars.
