"Adobe Premiere has given us an improved quality of life and a more profitable business." That s what Terry Green, a partner at twenty2product, has to say about the impact Adobe Premiere TM software and digital desktop video editing has had on his film design firm in San Francisco, California. Terry Green and Norizso Tolson formed twenty2product in 1987. The company produces films for corporate and broadcast use with clients that include some of the most recognized names in business, apparel and television. A large part of its business involves creating high-visibility work such as animated sequences for a major cable channel and an in- store marketing video for Nike, Inc.

When producing broadcast and marketing videos for clients, twenty2product relies heavily on desktop video technology. Green and his partner used to spend a lot of time and money working in high-end video post-production houses, and they estimate that handling all their post- production activities on the desktop has cut their cost of doing business by 75 percent. Prior to using desktop video editing software, twenty2product frequently used Quantel Harry or on-line systems with Abekas to do graphics and comping. While Green and Tolson were happy with the results on the high-end systems, at $500 to $600 an hour for post-production, they were reluctant to experiment at the expense of their clients, especially because they could never be sure what the end product would look like. "We usually discover the best technique by (happy) accident or deliberate experimentation," says Green. "With Adobe Premiere, we don t have to experiment at the expense of our clients. We can easily deliver a killer product at a fraction of the cost." Ease of use was a deciding factor when choosing a video editing software package. "Adobe Premiere was so easy to use," says Green. "A friend of mine showed me the program, and after playing with it for about a week, I was able to turn out three pieces for the QuickTime TM film festival in 92. I was literally cranking stuff out instantly." Green often uses Adobe

Premiere and Adobe Photoshop TM together in his work, and increased creative control is a benefit he attributes to these programs, describing them as "liberating pieces of technology." Because of his graphic design background, he believes that effective layering of elements depends on the underlying composition of the frame.
