Mountain View, Calif. (October 20, 1993) (NASDAQ:ADBE) -- Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced that 3M has incorporated Adobe s Configurable PostScriptTM Interpreter

(CPSI) Level 2 into Version 2 of the 3M RainbowTM desktop color proofing system and in the 3M

ScotchprintTM Electronic Graphics System.

Both systems are available now from 3M. CPSI is a PostScript interpreter that resides in a workstation and performs the PostScript language rasterization function typically done in a hardware controller embedded in an output device. Adobe s CPSI Level 2 software resides in a Macintosh in the 3M Rainbow desktop color system and on a Sun SPARCstationTM in the 3M Scotchprint system.

CPSI Level 2 offers professional users performance enhancements, as well as new features such as device-independent color capability, image decompression, color separation, forms and pattern caching and support for large character sets. CPSI offers OEMs greater flexibility in developing new products. "Adobe is pleased to be working with 3M in developing innovative applications of Adobe s PostScript technology," said Steve MacDonald, senior vice president and general manager of Adobe s Systems Products Division. "Whether it is for desktop color proofing of ad materials or for displays on trailer trucks and billboards, Adobe s PostScript Level 2 color capabilities offer end users a systematic way of producing the highest quality output."

3M Rainbow Version 2.0 Software

3M Rainbow Version 2.0 software allows users to make proofs on the desktop directly from the same separation files that will be sent to an imagesetter for films. CPSI Level 2 accelerates the RIPing process and improves memory management. Version 2.0 also features an Adobe PhotoshopTM Export Plug-In module that allows direct printing from the Adobe Photoshop application. The 3M Rainbow system includes proprietary software and a dye-sublimation proofer that makes continuous-tone, 17.2-by-11.8-inch (more) proofs directly from the PostScript language files of a Macintosh or PC. Graphic designers, art directors and prepress trade shops can print accurate proofs of color layout...
