Abstract

A hierarchical, multi-tier system for the large-scale, nationwide storage and retrieval of biometric information. This system allows biometric information to be available nationwide and at the state and local level. The technique involves capturing biometric information locally and replicating it up to city or state storage systems. This data is then replicated up to national storage systems, and then in turn replicating it down to state, cities or local devices where it has never been active before, on-demand.

Large volumes of biometric security information such as fingerprints, voice prints or retinal information are CPU-intensive to search and can make fast turnaround impossible without mainframe resources.

Biometric data can be captured by local scanners or readers and placed in databases that feature either Q-replication or Enterprise Replication capabilities. This data is replicated to the next highest server level, and onwards until it is replicated to nationwide repositories. Retrieval is done at the local level and if a match is not found, escalated to the next level server until a match is found. If no match is found the biometric data will be entered as a new record and replicated upward.

For example, if a nationwide organization requires biometric access control data will be captured locally and replicated up via regional servers to a nationwide server. If an employee changes location to another state, a query for a biometric match will first search the local database and then access its parent database which in turn will escalate the query to its parent as needed until a match is found. When the match is found the data items will be cascaded down to all the servers in the chain, so that the information is available in the employee's domain of operation.
