Disclosed is a mechanism which dynamically broadcasts and updates the address book of a phone user as well as inform the user that the information has changed and provide the updated information when the caller attempts to initiate contact. This can be implemented as a fee-based service offered by the phone/service providers.

A central server keeps track of new phone numbers. When a user changes a phone number (either changes carriers or just gets a new number), the user is given a choice to register with a central repository. The repository contains the old phone number and the new phone number apart from other details like carrier info, address and other relevant information. When the old phone number is dialed, depending on the bandwidth of the server, the phone does a quick poll to the central server and checks if there is a new listing for the old number. If not, it will continue to dial and ring the user. If the bandwidth is of a concern, then the phone will prompt the user to poll the central server if a call does not go through. If there is an updated phone number, that number will be updated automatically in the address book of the phone of the calling user.

A database or registry or the data mapping file where the data is stored keeps track of the number of times a number may have been changed and does an appropriate look up for a specific out going number. This dynamic feature helps a user from having to explicitly inform everyone about the change of number. The look-up is based irrespective of the service provider.
