Abstract

When I set to work on this issue, I of course thought of the Wolontis- Bell interpreter, and authors in this issue have reminded me of it further. I telephoned Richard Hamming at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He said he was much too busy to help but referred me to Bell Telephone Laboratories, where Al Aho referred me to Vic Vyssotsky. He, in turn, found not only the original Wolontis Technical Memorandum, dated August 18, 1955, but also a copy of a later Technical Memorandum, dated September 14, 1956, by Ruth A. Weiss and Hamming.
