Abstract

All the records I have seen agree that the first customer shipment of the 650 was to John Hancock Life Insurance Company in Boston on December 12, 1954. George E. Wallace was an actuarial assistant when the machine was delivered and installed in the punched-card area under the control of the accounting department. He reports in a /ester that he set up the calculation of dividends on the 650, punched out the results on the 650, and then used standard punched-card equipment to merge those cards with name and address cards. He further reports that the second 650 delivered to Hancock went to the actuarial department, which eventually installed five 650s, later replaced by a magnetic- tape-operated UNIVAC.
