1. For many years the topic of Artificial Intelligence has been recognized as an important aspect of the computer field, even though its exact definition is still in dispute. By 1960, how many of the following "human oriented, intelligent type" tasks had been implemented on a computer, who were the key person(s) involved, and approximately when was the work done?

Proving theorems in logic and plane geometry Playing checkers and chess Assembly line balancing Composing music Designing motors Recognizing manual Morse Code

2. Both RCA and General Electric were once in the business of building and selling computers. To what companies did each of them sell their computer business, and when?

3. UNIVAC I and General Electric were once both significant elements in the computer field. What unique relationship existed between them?

4. The ENIAC began running in 1946. When was the patent applied for, when was it issued, and to whom? What happened to the patent?

5. With the thousands of computers in use today, it is often surprising to see how many and what types of computers were installed in the 1940s and early 1950s. (a) How many new computer installations were there in each of the years 1941-1945? (b) How many of the computers and their installations can you name for 1941-1952? (c) Which computer had the most installations in 1951 and 1952 and what were its main characteristics? (d) What were the most prevalent installed computers in 1953 and 1954?
