Abstract

When confidential documents are printed, sometimes potential disclosure risk exists because the owner may not take it in time. At present, there are some researches on printer protecting. But they all focus on user authentication to use the printer, not about how to protect documents after printed. We propose a new way to protect printed documents based on user identity authentication, a so-called secured printer. The core component of the secured printer is like a locked drawer. When printing a confidential document, the secured printer also makes a mark on the document representing the ownership of the document and put it into a locked drawer. When a person wants to take the document, he/she must provide a key for authentication. If the authentication succeeds, secured printer will turn to the corresponding pages and pop them out.

When confidential documents are printed, sometimes potential disclosure risk exists because the owner may not take it in time. For example, in some offices, the printer is far from the document owner, so the printed documents may be taken by other unauthorized persons who by mistake, leave alone the circumstances that the owner actually forgot to take it. At present, there are some researches on printer protecting. But they all focus on user authentication to use the printer, not about how to protect documents after printed.

One solution to reduce disclosure risk is to make each person wait before the printer for his/her own document. However, this wastes time and results in low efficiency. Besides, there are always some interrupts happen that force an owner leave for a while, such as answering a very important phone call. The printed documents can be taken by others during this period of time. Another solution is to prepare a particular printer for the person who needs to print confidential documents frequently. But certainly this solution requires additional cost.

In this invention, we propose a new way to protect printed documents based on user identity authentication.We call it a secured printer and it includes both software and hardware components.

The core component of the secured printer is like a locked drawer. When printing a confidential document, the secured printer also makes a mark on the document representing the ownership of the document and put it into a locked drawer. When a person wants to take the document, he/she must provide a key for authentication. If the authentication succeeds, secured printer will turn to the corresponding pages and pop them out.

Using this method have such advantages´╝Ü

First´╝îidentity verification assures that only authenticated person can take his/her own document, where identity entities can be in different forms such as key, password, ID card and so on. This makes the system robust.

Second, the printing events can be stored in the secured printer so it is easy to track the document usage and its life cycle.

Third, the system can be implemented as an accessorial apparatus or a system. The cost of the solution is moderate and it is easy to develop.
