Abstract

The control and monitoring of North American railroad devices (such as relays, motors, lamps, switch machines) by microprocessor-based systems is performed by a wayside programmable logic controller. It is necessary to maintain this equipment and data (such as software cyclic redundancy checks (SW CRCs), revision levels, etc.) via periodic maintenance and testing. At present, this problem is solved by manual collection of data, estimates of quantities of operations and local storage of data. This requires manual calculation efforts and frequently also site visits costing time and manpower.

The control and monitoring of North American railroad devices (such as relays, motors, lamps, switch machines) by microprocessor-based systems is performed by a wayside programmable logic controller. It is necessary to maintain this equipment and data (such as software cyclic redundancy checks (SW CRCs), revision levels, etc.) via periodic maintenance and testing.

At present, this problem is solved by manual collection of data, estimates of quantities of operations and local storage of data. This requires manual calculation efforts and frequently also site visits costing time and manpower.

The suggested solution to this problem is to use data regarding the devices controlled and the controller. This data is currently made available to fulfill interface requirements such as advanced train communication system (ATCS) or codeline protocols to a dispatch center, event recorders and local control panels. The collection, analysis and reporting of this data can lead to the ability to remotely monitor information and plan local actions from a centralized business location. The data is made available (e.g. as an email, personal computer file or intera/internet file) to a railroad operator's business network over a communication medium.
