Abstract

A reduced weight automotive trim component such as a visor core is formed by use of a chemical blowing agent during the injection molding process of the visor body. The blowing agent is intended to decrease the density of the plastic material that is used in formation of the visor body, as a method of reducing the weight of a visor body without reducing the size of the visor body. The reduced weight trim component formed with a blowing agent during a molding process may be used in a wide variety of trim components such as a visor, door panel, floor panel, instrument panel, console, etc.

Abstract

Background

         It is generally know to provide trim components such as a visor body, door panel, console, etc. formed by injection molding of a plastic material. However, such trim components have the disadvantage of being formed having a substantially "solid" body portion with a density that is approximately the same as the material used in the formation of the trim component. This disclosure describes a method of reducing the weight of the trim components by reducing their density through introduction of a blowing agent during the molding process.

Description

         According to one embodiment of the present invention, an automotive trim component is formed having a reduced density and thus a reduced weight by introduction of a blowing agent into the plastic material during the molding process for the component. The following description includes a trial that describes an exemplary embodiment of the method and the reduced weight trim component made according to the method.

         The trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of adding a chemical blowing agent to the resin in an automotive trim component shown as a thin wall visor core, for mass reduction. The goal was to reduce the mass by a minimum of 10%, without having a significant effect on the other physical properties of the core.
