A system of improving the dependability of vending machines using RFID technology .

Disclosed is a system whereby beverage product vending machine customers can be assured that the product selected for purchase is the product dispensed. The reason for this problem is that during machine re-stocking the wrong beverage can be placed in the wrong slot. For example, the Diet Soda slot is mistakenly filled with one or more Regular Sodas. Some newer vending machines have attempted to solve this problem by letting customers select their product based on location, rather than brand. These machines are usually mechanically complicated and prone to jamming, which is why the classic slot-based system is still the predominate system used today.

There are two ways of implementing this system:'

Each beverage container is tagged with a passive RFID tag that indicates brand. In

addition, the labels for the vending machine buttons are also tagged. Each button corresponds to one or more slots in the vending machine. When a products label is placed in a button, the vending machine reads the label and "knows" that only this product should be stocked in the corresponding slots. As the machine is stocked, each beverage container is read as it is placed in the slots. If the wrong beverage container is placed in the wrong slot, the stocker is immediately notified that he/she has made a mistake.
