The invention is a wireless handheld device that can switch back and fourth between local earth based service provider and LEO Satellite networks such as Iridium and Globalstar.
As a yachtsman and semi-professional captain, I can tell you that a truly mobile voice and data solution does not exist. The problem is that if you need global connectivity, you really can't seamlessly roam back and forth between different networks. This can become confusing and in most cases, roaming from network to network becomes unreliable. A good example is the commercial shipping business, i.e. cargo ships. Ships travel over open sea where no local earth base data network may exist. Furthermore, the continual movement of the boat creates problems as you move in and out of political boundaries. For this reason, shipping companies need to enhance their communication services by resorting to the devices provided my external Low Earth Orbit satellite networks such as Iridium and Globalstar. However, these solutions are very expensive and do not provide the e-mail integration back to headquarters as we are accustom to. Although the market share for my particular example may be smaller then land based markets, the transportation markets are "high-rollers" and are waiting for and are prepared to pay the price for a better solution.
