In order to upgrade or patch software on a mobile device, a user must use the desktop to perform the software installation. There is no facility whereby features/applications can be updated automatically and wirelessly.

The invention provides a mechanism whereby software upgrades and patches can be automatically downloaded and installed over the air with minimal user intervention and without the need for a separate desktop computer.

The device maintains an inventory of the versions of code on the device and notifies the server whenever this changes (user loads new code, download games, etc.). If a bug is found in the device software and a patch is available, the server will know which devices may need to be patched and can send a wireless notification to the device. The user could then choose to have the patch downloaded and installed automatically over the air rather than having to locate a desktop system and cradle.

The device would need to know the location of the server to request the relevant code from. This could be provisioned either through an IT policy or through service books in much the same way that Over-the-Air (OTA) synchronization is provisioned.

The system could be developed in such a way that only small updates and patches are available for OTA deployment or that these updates could be scheduled during off-peak times.
