Abstract

Cellphones and wireless handheld devices usually incorporate a power-up button and a flashing LED status indicator. The power-up button provides an easy method of powering on and off the unit, while the status indicator may indicate in or out of service area or that there is a message waiting. The problem is that three separate components are used for the LED, light guide and switch. The invention is a combined switch and status indicator that saves material and labour cost associated with the light guide When it is desired to have both the power switch and the status indicator on the same surface (usually the top), it is possible to combine them into one assembly. The top of the switch is a transparent material that transmits the light from the LED. The LED is placed on the PCB next to the switch and the switch acts as a light guide. The LED may also be incorporated in the switch but this is probably already patented. This has the added benefit of having one less component to place on the SMT line. The switch and housing are shaped such that the indicator is visible from the front surface or the top surface of the handheld. The benefits of this approach are: * simplify the front housing tool (one less aperture required) * reduced component count (separate light pipe not required) * reduce labour content of front housing and associate cost * reduce material cost of front housing and associated cost
