When the vibrate option on a mobile device is enabled and the device is placed on a hard surface such as a table top, the execution of the vibrate option creates unusual behavior. Some behaviours that are observed are as follows:

·        On a hard surface a very loud noise may occur depending on the nature of the surface.

·        The mobile device may vibrate completely off the surface (i.e., tabletop) causing it to fall, causing device damage.

One proposed solution is to place a gyroscopic type sensor or a postion detection sensor (e.g., an actuator) into the mobile device. The sensor may determine when the device is laying flat.

With this information the device will automatically adjust the vibrate feature. The adjustment can be in several ways such as

·        Disable vibration and replace it with sound or flashing LED to notify the user of an incoming message.

·        Disable vibration with no alternate indicator of incoming messages.

·        Scale down the magnitude of the vibrate (soft vibrate) so as not to have the undesireable behaviour described above.

The position sensor, along with knowledge of whether the moible device is in or out of the holster, can be combined to adjust the vibration feature of the mobile device.
