Abstract

Although Satellite Radio offers several content options to the subscriber, there is no autonomic mechanism that allows the subscriber to easily switch between different types of content seamlessly. This report proposes a methodology for allowing the subscriber this convenience by gathering pertinent information about the subscriber and/or the system (housing the receiver) and using it to trigger the receiver to select subscriber preferred content according to a predetermined Subscriber (user) content selection policy.

Autonomic Content Selection for Satellite Radio Systems

Satellite radio is a subscription radio service that delivers music and radio programming. The signal is broadcast nationwide and offers clear service independent of receive location. Tuners to receive the broadcast are installed in a vehicles such as cars or planes, but can also be accessed to portable receivers for use in the home, work or almost anywhere.

Although the service offers several content options to the subscriber, there is no autonomic mechanism that allows the subscriber to easily switch between different types of content seamlessly. This report proposes a methodology for allowing the subscriber this convenience by gathering pertinent information about the subscriber and/or the system (housing the receiver) and using it to trigger the receiver to select subscriber preferred content according to a predetermined Subscriber (user) content selection policy.

The core idea of the invention is using user and/or system information as a trigger to appropriately select content from the Satellite Radio Service automatically. The advantage of the solution is that the user preferred content for a particular set of conditions can be automatically determined.

It is assumed that systems and technologies are available which can determine the state of the user and the state of the vehicle.
