Today, with the development of Internet, we have Voice over IP (VoIP) phone & Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) phone in the same location .

    Most of ADSL equipment providing Voice over IP feature are based on the architecture shown in Figure 1. A telephone outlet simultaneous supporting both standard telephony and data communication over telephone wiring within a residence or other building, typically contains a low pass filter 500 also called ADSL filter, connected between the telephone wiring 555 and the telephone connector pins 510 used for telephony (e.g. pins 2 and 3 in typical North-American RJ-11 6-pin connectors). In addition, a direct, unfiltered connection 535 to the telephone wiring is supported, allowing the connection of modems and high pass filters for access the high frequency portion of the spectrum for data communication. Benefits include easy and direct connection of a telephone set and data devices to the same outlet, and elimination of the need to modify telephone with low pass filter. Equipment connected to unfiltered connection 535 typically provide triple play functions (data, Voice over IP and Video over IP). In France service provider like "Free" provide its customer with such equipment (FreeBox) on which a standard telephone equipment may be connected to use VoIP function. So the user may have two telephone equipment 540, 550 associated to different number and connected respectively to the ADSL filter 500 and to Voice over IP stack 530. The connection 555 and 545 use the same protocol.

The invention consists to add a Handset switch 600 between the telephone sets 550, 540 and both the ADSL filter 500 and the Voice over IP stack 530 as show in Figure 2, to allow any of the telephone set for outgoing call to use the Voice over IP stack when it is not used by the other equipment (Stand-by status). For incoming call received either for the PSTN extension number associated to low pass filter line 555 or for VoIP extension number associated to VoIP stack 545, the telephone set is selected according to a predefined order and to the status of the telephones set. The status of telephone set are "Stand-by" when On Hook or "Busy" when Take off or On

    By configuration, a telephone set may be permanently associated to an output line for the outgoing call.
