Abstract

Currently, deaf people use teletype writers (TTY) to communicate. A TTY is typically a 50-baud modem integrated into a display terminal. Mobile data devices are popular among the deaf community since they provide a means to wirelessly communicate. However, one of the key things mobile data devices cannot be used for is to communicate with many telephone services. The infrastructure for TTY communication is typically separate from cellular networks. The proposed solution is to enable deaf users to communicate with existing TTY infrastructure conveniently, without requiring separate terminals or awkward periphery connections (e.g., connecting keyboard). The proposed solution would enable mobile devices to directly communicate with TTY devices. Furthermore, the keypad and screen of the mobile device can provide all of the necessary TTY functionality in one convenient package. Furthermore, existing cellular infrastructure includes 911 service, which could be incorporated as a further safety feature.
