Abstract

This method applies to all networks because all networks have the option of using SIP as their call-control mechanism. This is an invention that addresses an unwanted interaction between SIP registration (RFC 3261) and Virtual Private Networks. When sending a SIP REGISTER request, there is a possibility that a VPN connection and SIP Registration will not occur within a reasonable amount of time, causing an SIP-based phone to be not operational. The invention solves the problem by placing a maximum timeout on the amount of time a SIP registration procedure should wait before abandoning the registration of the Virtual IP Address and proceeding with registering the public IPAddress.
