Abstract

This article describes a Sealing Shoes Conversion Kit for Heat Activated Adhesive (HAA) & Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) cover tape, to be used in a taping or sealing machine at the taping operation of Integrated Circuit Packaging (ICP) using an SMS or tape-and-reel packing system.A conventional way to make the PSA sealing shoes is to take the heat sealing shoes back to the metal tool shop, get a drawing to modify the two blades having a rubber o-ring. All functional dimensions (holes for attachment, interlocking features, distance between blades, sealing height) have to be the same. In place of the conventional way to make PSA sealing shoes as described above, a sealing shoes conversion kit can be used to go from heat sealing shoes to PSA sealing shoes with a ready-install plastic rail. The rail is pre-cut to the size of the blades and can accommodate different blade widths. The conversion kit can be installed easily on the current HAA shoes without intensive design and metal tool shop involve.

This article describes a Sealing Shoes Conversion Kit for Heat Activated Adhesive (HAA) & Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) cover tape, to be used in a taping or sealing machine at the taping operation of Integrated Circuit Packaging (ICP) using an SMS or tape-and-reel packing system.

There are different designs of heat seal shoes available in a variety of taping machines. The shoes consist of two sealing blades in parallel to seal both sides of the cover tape onto the carrier tape. For Heat Activated Adhesive (HAA) cover tape, the shoes are made of stainless steel or brass and will be heated up to 180°C to 220°C at the taping process. This can be a block with two blades underneath at different carrier widths (8mm, 12mm, 24mm), or a strip with a blade that can be installed and adjusted individually. The blade width is about 0.5mm to 0.7mm.

With Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) sealing technology, the cover tape will be made into a PSA cover tape with adhesive at both edges. This adhesive area should be small but wide enough to give good adhesion strength or peel back force after it is sealed onto the carrier tape. Generally, it will be 0.8mm up to 1.5mm, depends on adhesive type and carrier width. This PSA cover tape will need only enough pressure to press on both adhesive ends and does not require heat. This means that the sealing shoes will have to be modified to be a PSA type with bigger and softer sealing blades to cover the adhesive areas. Therefore, the blades are usually made of plastic or rubber to have pressure applied evenly, without sharp points that can create nicks on the cover tape.

A conventional way to make the PSA sealing shoes is to take the heat sealing shoes back to the metal tool shop, get a drawing to modify the two blades having a rubber o-ring. All functional dimensions (holes for attachment, interlocking features, distance between blades, sealing height) have to be the same (see Fig.3).
