Abstract

A silsesquioxane resin wax, a new innovative technology, is useful in a variety of personal or medical care compositions. It can be in the form of a liquid, paste, soft solid or hard solid. The silsesquioxane resin wax has the formula, (R2R΄SiO1/2)x(R΄΄SiO3/2)y, where x and y have a value of 0.05 to 0.95, R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group, a carbinol group, or an amino group, R΄ is a monovalent hydrocarbon having 9 – 40 carbon atoms, R΄΄ is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group. The silsesquioxane resin wax can be used in antiperspirants, deodorants, skin creams, skin care lotions, moisturizers, facial treatments such as acne or wrinkle removers, personal and facial cleansers, sunscreens, make-ups, color cosmetics, foundations, blushes, lipsticks, lip balms, eyeliners, mascaras, and powders. They can also be combined with various other components to prepare a broad range of personal care or medical care formulation. This new unique silsesquioxane resin wax technology has demonstrated new benefits over the conventional wax technologies like alkylmethylpolysiloxanes and organic waxes such as ease of formulation in all types of emulsions forms, improved non-transfer properties in lipstick, potential impact on sunscreens efficiency, as well as improvement in curve holding properties and resistance to rubbing (better smudge proof) in mascaras.

Scope of The New Silsesquioxane Resin Wax Technology

The composition, the process, as well as its combination with a wide range of cosmetic materials across a broad range of personal care and medical applications for this new silsesquioxane resin wax technology have been described in patent application WO2005100444.

The silsesquioxane resin wax has the general formula, (R2R΄SiO1/2)x(R΄΄SiO3/2)y, where x and y have a value of 0.05 to 0.95, R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group, a carbinol group, or an amino group, R΄ is a monovalent hydrocarbon having 9 – 40 carbon atoms, R΄΄ is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group. Three resin waxes were evaluated in this study; R΄: C20-24, C26-28, and C30 + with a focus on C30+.

Combination of theses new resin waxes together with a wide range of solvents, silicones, as well as other personal care ingredients and their use in personal care and health care applications have been well covered in the patent mentioned above. The objective of this article is to review in more detail the properties and benefits of these new silsesquioxane resin waxes both neat and in formulated products.
