Abstract

In systems based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 specification, the service flow identifiers (SFIDs) allocated to service flows are required to be unique within a given base station (BS). In the IEEE 802.16e amendment to IEEE802.16-2004, when a mobile station (MS) hands over from one BS to another, it is required to preserve the SFIDs of its service flows. This implies that the SFID allocated to a service flow of a given MS is required to be unique within all the BSs that the MS may visit while the service flow is active. This article proposes a simple mechanism to ensure such uniqueness for unicast service flows, based on a dynamic exchange of SFIDs.
