Problem solved

This invention provides a novel information management system for project management tools, more specifically, for Gantt Chart, to display and control the project status, context, and progress.

Background Most work in a company can be categorized into normal operational work and project."A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result" (PMBOK). Since projects have specific goals within specific time duration, which is coincide with the changing business environment, more and more work is moving into projects. Some companies (such as IBM) are becoming a project centric company.

Companies began to manage the projects in a systematic way from earlier of 20th century. "Project mgmt is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirement. Project mgmt is accomplished through the application and integration of the project mgmt processes of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing" (PMBOK).

Gantt Chart is a tool to show the work item change along with time. Since it is easy to understand and change, most project management tools have the Gantt Chart function. A typical Gantt Chart looks like figure 1

In the example Gantt Chart, there are two major parts. The left part is the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) which lists the tasks to be completed and the hierarchy of the tasks. The right part shows the time line of each task. Each line starts from a specific time (Start Time) and end at another specific time (End Time). The progress of the time line indicate the progress of the task so far.

Project managers and the team members regularly track, monitor, control and change the project schedule in the Gantt Chart of the project management tools.

Usually there are hundreds of tasks in one project. The Gantt Chart in the PM tools tried to show more tasks in one page, which make it difficult to display many necessary information for project management, for example, who is the task owner, is this task in the critical path, what are going on for a specific task. These information are important for the PM to estimate the risks, collaborate with the team members. Based on our user study of the Gantt Chart usage, in this invention, we provide a novel information management for Gantt Chart to provide the project managers and team members a central point to manage the project.
