Background

PCI stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect and represents a special-interest group (SIG)-governed standard. Part of the PCI specification covers architecture requirements for a bus arbitration module to ensure exclusive bus ownership for one of several possible requestors. PCI arbiters in earlier chipsets used two finite state machines, one version for the desktop arbiter and another version for the mobile arbiter. Muxing logic decided which version to use, and the mux-select signal was controlled by fuses or control registers. Using separate state machines complicates the design and increases gate count. Also, traditional PCI arbiters are prone to bugs because they can choose which agent to grant, right up to the moment before the decision is made. This solution is prone to errors, and can result in certain agents being “starved” due to a possible double transition of the round robin arbitration.
