Abstract

Disclosed is a control that allows the selection of a value or values within a group of values where values are subsets or supersets of other values. The control facilitates usability by automatically selecting subset values or deselecting superset values of a selection that is made. This control can also be extended to allow multiple selection when the group of values contains exclusive values.

Control for selecting and clearing values within a set of values that are interdependent

This control is intended to provide an easy way to select a value within a set of hierarchical values, as well as indicate the relationship of the values when a selection is made.

Figure 1 describes values that might be used in setting access to an object (e.g. document or web page). The values represent permission sets, and are hierarchical as shown in figure 1. The Reader permission set is a subset of the Editor permission set, Editor is a subset of Manager, and both Manager and Delegator are subsets of Administrator.

In the control illustrated in figure 2, the user can select any value at any time. When a value is selected, all subset values are automatically selected and all superset values are automatically deselected. If the user selects the current value, then that value is deselected along with any subset values.

The following lists describes the interaction of the control based on the example provided in figure 2:

The controls shown for User 1 indicate that Editor is currently selected.
