Abstract

Disclosed are cosmetic compositions containing new active ingredients, which comprise natural polysaccharides, preferably ß-1,3-glucanes of mean Molecular Weight of 1 to 12 million, such as the product which may be isolated from the fungi Sclerotium, Lentillium or Schizophyllium (scleroglucan, lentinan, schizophyllan). Besides the above scleroglucan, the new active ingredient contains at least one of the following further components: - an antimicrobial agent, based on Silver Dihydrogen Citrate, - an additional skin moisturizer selected from 1,2-pentanediol and/or sodium lactate. The advantageous effects especially of the ß-1,3-scleroglucans of this class surprisingly can be found even in those cosmetic formulations, wherein the glucan component is contained in a very low concentration.

The present publication relates to cosmetic compositions containing new active ingredients comprising natural polysaccharides, more preferably glucan polysaccharides, especially those having a three-dimensional structure of crosslinked triple helices, a preferable mean Molecular Weight of 1x106 to 12x106, and containing in its structure β- 1,3 bonded glucopyranose units as the main chain and β-1,6 bonded glucopyranose as the side chains according to the formula:

in which n is a number which provides the β-1,3 Scleroglucan component with a mean molecular weight of 1x106 to 12x106. Examples for these polysaccharides are materials disclosed in US-5814341, US-6162447 and US-6162449, inter alia for the preparation of stable and transparent gels, such as the product which may be isolated from the fungi Sclerotium, Lentillium or Schizophyllium (thus also called scleroglucan, lentinan, schizophyllan). The advantageous effects especially of the ß-1,3-glucans of this class surprisingly can be found even in those cosmetic formulations, wherein the glucan component is contained in a very low concentration.

Besides the above scleroglucan, the new active ingredient contains at least one of the following further components:

* an antimicrobial agent, based on Silver Dihydrogen Citrate,
* an additional skin moisturizer selected from 1,2-pentanediol and/or sodium lactate.

The cosmetic formulation thus comprises, for example
a) 0.001 to 3 % of the scleroglucan of mean molecular weight 1 . 106 to 12 . 106;
b) a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; and
c) a further component selected from lactic acid, lactate and 1,2-pentanediol.

The lactate often is sodium lactate, preferred as component c) thus are sodium lactate and/or 1,2-pentanediol. Component c) is preferably used in an amount of 0.005 to 3, especially 0.02 to 1.0 % by weight, relative to the weight of the total product composition. The weight ratio of component (c) relative to component (a) (c:a) often is from the range 1:1 to 30:1.

The cosmetic end formulation is often prepared from a concentrate, containing component a) in a concentration that provides good handling especially with regard to the viscosity of the formulation, good storage stability, and easy dosability of the concentrate. The concentrate often contains about 0.3 to 3 % by weight of the polysaccharide (a), usually an aqueous carrier, and the lactate and/or 1,2-pentanediol (c) in the amount desired (see above).

The antimicrobial agent, based on Silver Dihydrogen Citrate is mainly used for deodorant and /or preservative applications.

The end-product formulations may exist in a wide variety of cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations, for example: creams, gels, lotions, alcoholic and aqueous/alcoholic solutions, emulsions, wax/fat compositions, stick preparations such as lipsticks or deodora...
