Disclosed is a method for a fully buffered dual in-line memory module (FBDIMM) single-sided heat spreader. Benefits include improved functionality, improved performance, improved thermal performance, and improved cost effectiveness.

Background

              Conventionally, a back-side heat spreader may not be required for some types of FBDIMMs. However, FBDIMM cooling is a bottleneck in the improvement of system performance.

Description

              The disclosed method is a front-side heat spreader for an AMB and a clip for attaching the heat spreader to the FBDIMM (see Figure 1).

              The design includes attachment features that lock the clip in the correct location and secure the clip during handling and transporting. The features are on the two ends of the FBDIMM to provide room for fingers to press the module into the connector. Two notches on the top side of the stick enable the clip to stay within the specified keep-out zone (see Figure 2).

              The disclosed method applies to applications when the FBDIMM does not require two heat spreaders. The single heat spreader requires fewer parts and, as a result, provides a cost reduction.
