Background

              Dual-mode designs are conventionally a relatively small market niche that includes, for example, tablet PCs. However, as the mobile market grows, device capabilities are expected to increase. One possible application is multi-utilization devices.

Description

              The disclosed method provides a pair of scroll bars that are conducive for use in a mobile device in both portrait and landscape orientations. The scroll bar is thumb accessible for easy use with keyboards that are also designed for use in both portrait and landscape modes (see Figures 1 and 2).

              The dual-mode scroll bar is integrated with a mobile device keyboard for ease of use (see Figures 3). As the display rotates, the scroll bars automatically adjust to the content. For example, in landscape mode, the scroll bars toggle between Up and Down scrolling functionality based on the orientation of the device.  The scroll bars can also act as a mouse replacement, by providing both scrolling functionality ("Up and Down"), as well as clicking ("Press and hold, or Press and Click"
