Abstract

A good designed User Interface needs usually more inputs from the device's navigation modules (e.g. trackball, track-wheel, mouse, etc). For example the click function of our track-wheel or trackball modules normally opens a menu for a particular object that the cursor is pointing to. In addition, some times even a very long menu options on a pop up menu can't include all the functionalities the user is searching for.

A good designed User Interface needs usually more inputs from the device's navigation

modules (e.g. trackball, track-wheel, mouse, etc). For example the click function of our track-wheel or trackball modules normally opens a menu for a particular object that the cursor is pointing to. In addition, some times even a very long menu options on a pop up menu can't include all the functionalities the user is searching for.

It is also more user friendly if the user could open several type of menus based on the particular environment the user is navigating through, and not only based on where the cursor pointing to. Some examples for other type of menus are a trackball setup menu (e.g. enable/disable digital click), help menu for the current panel, etc.

To increase the functionality of the navigation modules, without mechanically changing their design, we can in the software distinguish between "Click-and-Release" and "Click-Roll-Release". This can be done by detecting, in addition to existing direction and click detection,

"click-roll-up-and-release",

"click-roll-down-and-release",

"click-roll-left-and-release",

"click-roll-right-and-release"

(and combinations of above).

Following list shows some examples of how this extra functionality can be useful for a better UI for a handheld devices:
