Abstract

This invention is for power saving when a device is in idle mode. The waiting time to turn the backlight off and go to a sleep mode will be eliminated. When the user finishes working with the handheld, he will put it on the desk face down. This position will be detected by the device with built-in accelerometer and/or light sensor. The device will then turn the backlight immediately and switch to a sleep mode. This will reduce the idle power consumption which usually is controlled by a timer counting the specified delay since the last user input. When the device is taken out of the face-down position, the backlight will turn on, and the device will switch to the active mode.
