Background

      Conventional fan designs and implementations of electronic computer systems and consumer electronic devices control fan speed but not fan direction because the fans are unidirectional.

      An alternative solution is to control PC fans using specially designed fan-control application-specific integrated circuits.

Description

      The disclosed method is reversible system air-flow control for electronic computer systems and consumer electronic devices (see Figure 1).

      The method encompasses any system fans that have the following capabilities:

•     Electronic fan speed control

•     Electronic fan tack-speed reporting

•     Electronic fan direction control

•     Electronic fan direction reporting

•     Single voltage rail input

      The disclosed method is not limited to fans. It includes other rotating devices used for thermal management and control, including blowers.
