Background

      “Extensible Firmware Interface, update -001” was released November 2003 by Intel Corporation. This specification standardizes access to firmware.

      "Extensible Markup Language (XML) 1.0 (Third Edition)," was released February 2004 by World Wide Web Consortium.

      Conventional firmware access is local through existing interfaces, such as the built-in operating system (BIOS). This restriction is expected to be removed with the development of a unified EFI specification the is expected to include the network stack.

General description

      The disclosed method isremote EFI services in the preboot environment. The method enables system administrators and other troubleshooters to remotely diagnose hardware problems andupdate the BIOS. The method provides an extensible interface for remote system management in the pre-OS environment.
