Abstract

The problem we are trying to address is that when a person uses a computing resource and is billed for it, it is important that he only be billed for the amount of the resource that is actually used. It would be ideal if the billing were auditable in some way so that it is clear that the amount of the resource used is exactly the amount billed for.

Billing On Demand Computing

   There exists today a security chip called a TPM, which is embedded in many computers. In most implementations, it has a timer embedded in it that only increments when power is applied to the chip. Additionally, the increment rate can be linked into the clock rate of the CPU. Today a CPU on many systems can be placed in several different clock rates, and at a lower clock rate less computational power is available during a given amount of time. The idea described here is to have the TPM periodically use a digital signature to provide time stamped evidence of the current clock value of the TPM. That clock value will be proportional to the product of the actual time elapsed and the speed at which the CPU is running, and then can be used to determine the amount of computing resource that was used. The digital signature allows auditing of that value.
