Abstract

This invention proposes the Multimedia aided software installation and configuration to reduce consumption for users to install and configure software products. The main idea of this invention is to integrate multimedia help information with software installation and configuration. The multimedia materials are integrated in various ways decided by content of the installation. This invention is not only an integrated system to provide multimedia based help information, it is also a mechanism to give resources to the users based on their demand and provide them the most useful assistant they need.

Multimedia Aided Software Installation and Configuration

Main Idea

1. Background:

When installing softwares, we often need to manually fill in the blanks of configuration. Similarly, when the software installation is completed, users usually need to manually configure it for properly use. Some configuration is very easy to fill, for example, the IP host and machine name etc. However, some complex configuration causes a lot of trouble to users because they don't know how to configure it.

There are some configuration tips displayed at the installation pages during installing process, but sometimes users are still not very clearly about it in complex scenario, especially for the first time to install and configure it. Also, users can get more detail information from the manual or help documentation, but once encountering difficulties, they cannot get useful information from the manual at first time because of the obscure and long content of the installation manual. Nowadays, some plug-ins can use configuration and testing mechanisms to provide users default configuration information. But sometimes, the default configuration can not meet customers' requirements. In the mean time, the testing mechanism is to calibrate the filled contents after users completing each step of configuration. It is a remedial but not preventable measure which may not be able to completely alleviate the burden on users.

This invention proposes the Multimedia aided software installation and configuration to reduce consumption for users to install and configure software products.

2. Summary of Invention:

The core idea of this invention is to integrate multimedia (e.g. video, audio, flash, text) help information with software installation and configuration, and allow users install and configure software fast and easily. The multimedia materials are integrated in various ways decided by the content of the installation. If the installation is certain content based area, we use video or audio component to help user install and configure it. If the installation is redefined metrics based area, we use flash component. If the users have problems during using the software, we provide them a search bar to find the proper multimedia not only concerning the installation and configuration but also other trouble shootings.

First of all, with multimedia aided installation and configuration, users could install software products correctly and easily because every configuration step is clearly shown for users by visible ways. Furthermore, users can get the visible help information directly whenever they want.

Secondly, it is useful for both primary users and advanced users. For the users who are not familiar with the products or have less knowledge about the products, they can use this invention to learn more about the products besides software installation...
