Dynamic Object Identification in a Virtual World

Virtual worlds have the ability to display dynamic data that is personalized to individual users. For example, a user may visit a virtual world and locate a Best Buy store only to return the next day and find a Staples store in its place. Another example would be two people looking at the same physical space and seeing two different objects; user one sees a soccer game on the television but user two sees a football game. This creates some interesting problems, one of which is that users are unable to tell which objects are static and which are dynamic. This fact can make it difficult for users to create a sense of stability and commonality within the virtual world.

The identification can be done in several ways, but the idea remains the same; the user has the ability to identify a store, location, or any object as dynamic. This information allows users to create a proper mental picture of the current situation for further interaction. Using the example from before, the user knows that the Best Buy is a dynamic store and the user will not return to the same location in hopes of finding the Best Buy store.
