Abstract

The health care providers are under enormous pressure in the view of their clinical, operational and financial outcome. The processes and workflows in complex organizations such as a hospital are the main tasks of different consulting projects. Goal is to optimize the outcome for the specific customer on the clinical, operational and financial performance. Base is the patent application 2005 P2 0788 US "Clinical Workflow Simulation Tool and Method" (CWST). Different modules are necessary to apply the CWST. During the run of such a tool the resource management is one of the important things. Up to now, there is no specific resource module available which can be used in the CWST. Up to now, the resource management handles the resources simply as blocked and unblocked resources without taking into account which resource can be the best choice not to impede other workflows or processes. Furthermore, once a resource is assigned, the resource can not be accessed further.

Goal is to optimize the outcome for the specific customer on the clinical, operational and financial performance. During the run of such a tool the resource management is one of the important things. Up to now, there is no specific resource module available which can be used in the CWST. Therefore, a novel resource module for clinical simulations using the CWST is proposed. The proposed resource module plays a central role in the simulation run. It is proposed to use several resource modules so that one resource module manages all its assigned resources. The resource module is the central interface between the process module and the simulation layout. The main functionalities of the resource module are the following: check in and registration of new patients; assigning resources to a process and management of working packages. The resource module includes further modules and has additional functionalities such as described in the following:

• Service module which holds the available services and resources.

• Staff module which holds the available actors such as nurses, technicians or physicians.

• Calendar module which manages the appointments and controls time.

• Task pool module which manages the execution of jobs with prioritization.

These modules are used by the resource module to find the best strategy for an optimized resource allocation. If the scheduling module has done an appointment, the resource mapping is done by the scheduling module. In all other cases, the resource module maps the resources defined in the clinical workflow to real existing resources in the simulation.

If a resource is mapped from the process definition to a simulation process, the resource is available as long as the simulation process approves it. The simulation process stores the information how long the resource is blocked.
