Method and System for Automatically Constructing SIP Probing Model to Discover SIP Entity Information

We propose a new method for automatically constructing SIP probing model. The method mainly includes ProbingTree Builder which completes the offline training of SIP probing model based on a SIP device sample set, and SIP Discovery Engine which executes online SIP information discovery process with the guidance of SIP probing model. During the construction of SIP probing model, the optimized decision tree is obtained by considering the real object SIP network device composition, which leads to a lightweight SIP network management tool without bringing heavy burden to the network while discover enough SIP information.

Last few years, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has attracted a lot of attention from the real-time communications industry. Many vendors have kept their standardization and development focus on IMS. And it has been put great expectations by numerous operators and service providers. As the key basis of IMS management, SIP Entity Information Discovery (SEI Discovery) has been more and more important.
Currently, typical Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is adopted by Element Management Systems (EMS) in Network Management System (NMS) domain. SNMP is also the most popular approach applying in 2G telecom network management.
A managed device is a network node that contains an SNMP agent and that resides on a managed network. An agent is a network-management software module that resides in a managed device. An NMS executes applications that monitor and control managed devices. NMSs provide the bulk of the processing and memory resources required for network management. One or more NMSs must exist on any managed network.
But SNMP is not feasible to capture SIP entity information. For user-level devices, like phone or personal computer, unwillingness of device hosts and limited computing resource of devices are both obstacles of equipping SNMP agents into them. For server-level machines, access restriction of many SIP networks makes it difficult to equip SNMP agents into them.
Current Blind SIP probing approach does not require managed objects to equip any software but SIP protocol. But it does not guarantee the coverage of SEI information items and a number of probing messages will heavy the burden of network.
