Abstract

In the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) area, high speed taping machines used in a pick-and-place process dramatically increase the efficiency of assembling products. These machines depend on the highly precise locating of parts such that they can be grabbed easily and placed on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Carrier tapes and cover tapes contribute to this conveying and locating solution. In general, the carrier tapes include pockets to hold the individual SMT components and the cover tape seals the components into the pockets. Heat Activated Adhesive (HAA) cover tapes and Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) cover tapes are two main cover tapes in the SMT field. On an SMT production line, workers often need to splice two component-carrying tapes together, e.g., when a first reel of tape is at its end and a second reel needs to be started. These machines depend on the highly precise locating of parts such that they can be grabbed easily and placed on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Carrier tapes and cover tapes contribute to this conveying and locating solution. In general, the carrier tapes include pockets to hold the individual SMT components and the cover tape seals the components into the pockets.

Heat Activated Adhesive (HAA) cover tapes and Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) cover tapes are two main cover tapes in the SMT field. On an SMT production line, workers often need to splice two component-carrying tapes together, e.g., when a first reel of tape is at its end and a second reel needs to be started. Because the component parts in SMT are getting smaller and smaller, component handling issues have arisen.  For example, any unexpected vibration may cause dislodging of the components from the carrier tape pockets. New cover tapes have recently been developed by 3M Company to overcome these issues, for example by providing a consistent peel force (the tolerance is between +/- 10 grams).  These new tapes allow the interior portion of the cover tape to be removed while the exterior portions of the cover tape remain adhered to the carrier tape.  However, splicing these new cover tapes, as well as splicing PSA cover tapes, is not as straight forward as splicing HAA cover tapes.

For the new cover tapes and PSA cover tapes, if two tapes (i.e., carrier tapes with PSA or the new cover tape) are simply spliced together with a connecting tape (the as can be done with an HAA cover tape), testing shows that the splice point will break in the tape mounting machine. The connection method described in this article works for both PSA tapes and the new tapes. In the example described herein, the new tape is used as a sample.
