SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR triggering a spectrum analyzer

The present invention relates, in general, to spectrum analyzers, and in particular, to triggering spectrum analyzers based on power spectrum analysis.

One or more trigger zones are defined for analysis of a signal in a spectrum analyzer. The boundary of a trigger zone is defined by a continuous frequency range and a continuous power level range. The information related to boundary specification of each trigger zone is stored in a memory module of the spectrum analyzer. The spectrum analyzer is triggered when the frequencies and power levels of a component of the signal lie within one of the trigger zones. Further, the trigger zones can be combined by using Boolean logic to support complex triggering conditions.

Fig. 1 shows a power spectrum plot on a spectrum analyzer in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The X-axis and the Y-axis of the power spectrum plot denote frequency and power level of a signal respectively. Fig. 1 illustrates trigger zones Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4. The multiple trigger zones are predefined and stored in a memory module of the spectrum analyzer. Further, each trigger zone is associated with a continuous frequency range and a continuous power level range. The details of each trigger zone are provided below:

During the operation of spectrum analyzer, when the spectrum analyzer captures a component of the signal having frequency within the range F1 to F2 and a power level within the range P1 to P2 (Trigger Zone Z1), the spectrum analyzer is triggered. Similarly, a component of the signal corresponding to any of the trigger zones Z2, Z3, and Z4 triggers the spectrum analyzer. Though the figure illustrates only four trigger zones for the spectrum analyzer, it will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that any suitable number of trigger zones may be defined for triggering the spectrum analyzer.
