Method for High Secure Authentication Systems using GSS -API

  In this world of information technology, security plays a very vital role. Authentication is one of the key components for security based solutions. With the advent of e-commerce and e-business, distributed network security has gained a significant importance. Authentication over the wire has become the need of the hour. There are various authentication methods which are exercised over the network using various security mechanisms (like SSL/TLS & Kerberos*). In order to meet the stringent security requirements necessary in banking and e-commerce domain, either multi-layer authentication or multi-factor authentication or combinations of both are being used by the existing systems. Despite the advantages, most of the solutions exercising multi-factor as well as multi-layer authentication make use of the same underlying network security mechanism. Use of same security mechanism introduces a risk when addressing stronger security requirements. In other words, there is a risk associated with the use of same security mechanism in multi-factor authentication systems. In such cases GSS-API (Generic Security Service) can be used as a suitable option for achieving the multi security mechanism clubbed with multi-factor authentication for enhanced security .
