Abstract

Marketing and Sales need demonstration tools to provide customers with a visual presentation for flammability, blood strike-through, lint, comfort, and barrier properties on surgical gown and drape fabrics. These four demonstration tools provide the sales person with tools to show differences in surgical gown and drape fabrics in the properties specified in the AORN Recommended Practices and Guidelines (Reference: OR Today by MD Publishing, Vol. 4 No. 9, September 2004). This guideline recommends surgical gowns and drapes provide a barrier to fluids such as blood and other bodily fluids, low linting, resist combustion, and be comfortable to the wearer.

Resistance to Flammability

This demonstration device shows the flammability properties of surgical gown and drape fabric. The device is a metal wand which can be configured to hold 1 or 2 fabric samples. The samples are attached to the wand and held over a tray of water. The sales person will then attempt to ignite the samples with a cautery. A sample which melts away and does not ignite is superior to one which ignites and propagates a flame.

Resistance to Blood Strike-Through

This demonstration device shows the ability of a surgical gown or drape fabric to resist blood strike-through under pressure. The device includes a compression platter, inflatable bladder with an attached pressure gauge. The sample is placed on a piece of blotter paper and 2-3 drops of synthetic blood are placed on the sample. The sample and blotter paper are placed on the inflatable bladder and then in between the compression plates. The inflatable bladder is inflated so 1 psi of pressure is placed on the sample. The sample is removed and the blotter paper is examined for strike through. A sample which resists blood strike-through is superior to one which allows blood to penetrate.
