Abstract

This invention proposes well-formatted based spreadsheet copy and paste to release users from burdened spreadsheet adjustment work. The main idea of this invention is to enable well-formatted based spreadsheet copy and paste in Office Software. Well-formatted spreadsheet copy and paste provides automatically adjustment function so that part of spreadsheet can be displayed wholly with good format in designated area or non-designated area; part of spreadsheet is copied as one sheet not one object including all sheets in Excel file, and the size of destination file will not increase greatly; part of spreadsheet can be modified after paste, no matter whether you have installed Excel or not. This invention is not only a feature enhancement to current Office Software, it is also a mechanism to increase usability based on users’ demand and improve their working efficiency.

Well-formatted based spreadsheet copy and paste

Main Idea

1. Background:

Users often copy part of spreadsheet from Excel andpaste onto Word or PowerPoint. The layout after paste is very malformed and usually cannot display the whole part of spreadsheet in visible range. It needs great effort to adjust, and the original format will be lost.

Both Word and PowerPoint including MS Office and IBM Lotus Symphony already have an enhanced function called paste special including Excel Worksheet Object and Picture. The former will paste all sheets as one object but not the only selected part of spreadsheet, the size of destination file will increase dramatically especially when the Excel file itself is very large; and the most important fact is that users may not want to paste all sheets. The latter will paste as a picture so that users can't modify the spreadsheet.

Consider the following two scenarios users may face:

Users copy part of spreadsheet from Excel and pasteonto Word or PowerPoint.
1. Users don't designate the area in which to paste, but users would like the part of spreadsheet to be displayed according to the current layout of Word or PowerPoint.
2. Users designate the area in which to paste using Drawing Tools, and users would like the part of spreadsheet to be displayed in the designated area. In both of above two scenarios, users would like the part of spreadsheet be well formatted and can be modified after paste.

With existing functions provided by MS Office or IBM Lotus Symphony, users must manually adjust the layout after paste. It's not acceptable and will waste a great deal of time especially when the spreadsheet is large and complex; and the layout after adjustment is not tidy and neat as before. Our disclosure is to provide a mechanism to solve these problems easily.

2. Summary of Invention:

The core idea of this invention is to enable well-formatted based spreadsheet copy and paste.

Firstly, users can choose whether use well-formatted spreadsheet copy and paste or manually adjustmentaccording to actual need after paste.

Secondly, well-formatted spreadsheet copy and pasteprovides automatically adjustment function so that:

Part of spreadsheet can be displayed wholly with good format in designated area or non-designated area;

Part of spreadsheet is copied as one sheet not one object including all sheets in Excel file, and the size of destination file will not increase greatly; Part of spreadsheet can be modified after paste, nomatter whether you have installed Excel or not.

Thirdly and most importantly, using this disclosure, users will be released from burdened spreadsheet adjustment work.

3. Description:

The following steps describe the task flow:
1. Users copy part of spreadsheet from Excel.
2. Store the data and format in memory.
3. Users paste this part of spreadsheet onto Word or PowerP...
