UNIVERSAL SHEAVE HANGER

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to a single sheave
hanger that is adapted to accommodate a large and a small
elevator, as well as a standard and a heavy duty sheave wheel.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sheave hangers are used to transport a sheave wheel from a
ground surface to an oilwell rig, by use of an elevator.
Typically, one sized hanger is used for large elevators and a
different sized hanger is used for small elevators. In
addition, it is also common for different hangers to be used for
different sized sheave wheels. Accordingly, a need exists for a
single hanger adapted to accommodate elevators of different
sizes and/or a single hanger adapted to accommodate sheave
wheels of different sizes.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

As described and illustrated below, in one embodiment of
the present invention, a hanger is provided that includes two
different surfaces, referred to as surface 1 and 2, each for
receiving a different sized elevator. In addition, the hanger
includes an eye at an end thereof positioned so that different
sheave wheels may be mounted thereon.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Below are drawings of the invention. The two different
surfaces on which the sheave hanger will rest for a larger
(surface 2) and a smaller elevator (surface 1) can be seen in
Figure 1. For example, in one embodiment, surface 1 is sized

for receiving a five inch elevator, and surface 2 is sized for
receiving a seven inch elevator.

FIGURE 1

As shown in Figure 1, the lower eye (where the sheave wheel
is mounted) is positioned and sized so that it will fit the
larger yoke of a heavy duty sheave wheel and the smaller yoke

for the standard sheave wheel. Figure 2 shows how the sheave
hanger fits into the yoke of a standard sheave wheel.

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the yoke eye of a
standard sheave wheel aligned with the lower eye of the sheave
hanger. As shown, for the yoke of the standard sheave wheel,
the yoke eye and the sheave hanger lower eye are aligned so that
the bottom of the eyes are tangent to each other. This
tangential alignment is achieved by making the dimension "X" of
Figure 1 equal to the dimension "Y" of Figure 2. The benefit of
the tangential alignment is to allow for maximum material below
the eye on the sheave hanger(i.e. a maximum "X" dimension). The
material below the eye on the shea...
