Abstract

Variety of bundled services that are enabled by IMS or multi-play infrastructure is going to be bigger revenue generator than just providing the bulk bandwidth to the subscriber/ user on the name of 3G and IP convergence. However, the migration of the communication networks towards all IP is an opportunity for the operators and service providers. The service infrastructure of IMS, IPTV etc. are expected to bring telecommunications the rich experience of next generation services, but severely handicapped by the levels of charging for the bundled services. The service scenarios are not very straight forward as far as the charging bundles are concerned and are very complex for revenue realization.

Introduction

The online charging market is flooded by vendor specific interfaces that are becoming complex and more proprietary, hence poses a threat to manageability of future operations with NGN services during the launch of enhanced service in 2.5G and 3G. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is facing the tough challenge with the inadequacies that are influencing the decision from the operators for the launch. The gap is the chargeability of bundled services offered under the NGN using the IMS or IPTV backend service profiling.

The support for appropriate charging conditions on the managed multi-

play services is a biggest

gap in operations of NGN. The mapping between the logic of service management and the charging profiles would determine the success of bundled customer products. But, the service management systems would maintain only the provisioned privileges with reference to the authorizations of using such services. This created the necessity for a framework that not only synchronizes the service control systems with the bundles defined in the business process domains but also maintains the charging logic.

The orientation of event synchronization for charging needs would be embracing AAA

philosophy to bring the charging in general to a common framework. This would create a

comfortable business translation methodology that would allow operators/ service providers to

plan for launch of services quickly. The traditional AAA has always been with RADIUS, but the

acceptance by 3GPP for Diameter opens a new dimension of managing the 'Service Events' while synchronizing the business applications through 'Charging Events'.
