Abstract

This idea proposes using phase change ink technology to print a layer of ink and images on a foil coated cardboard material to create a product called scraperfoil. Scraperfoil is an artist's medium that is comprised of layers. There is a cardboard base, a metal foil, and a surface layer that is usually a dark material that can readily be scrapped off from the foil. The dark surface material will typically have line drawing patterns printed on it. The patterns are used to guide the artist in deciding what portions of the surface to remove. Once the specified surface areas are removed the shiny metal is exposed which can produce a pleasing effect when contrasted with the dark surface layer. This idea proposes that phase change ink be used to coat the foil as well as print the guide patterns. A website would offer pay-on-download scraperfoil patterns.

This idea proposes to utilize existing phase change Ink printing technology to generate scraperfoil engravings on a print on demand basis. It is intended that a Phase change Ink image would be printed directly onto a sheet of foil coated cardboard. Phase change ink is particularly suitable for this application as it freezes on the cool printing surface without wicking into the foil, ideal when wanting to remove lines or sections of the print. Engraving phase change ink prints is particularly effective with a sharp object.
