Abstract

The invention provides a method and system for facilitating collaborative reading for medical review stations. The system includes a mechanism for doctors and radiologists to find out who is available for comments and contact them, share information from the review station with the other doctor. This will also facilitate the doctors and radiologists to synchronize their review sessions at two independent review stations. Further the system provides a mechanism for doctors and radiologists to play, pause, step forward, rewind and insert new steps in their review sessions, while retaining the synchronization between the two review stations.

FIELD OF INVENTION

[0001]               The invention generally relates to a teleradiology and more specifically to a method and system for facilitating collaborative reading for medical review stations.

BACK GROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002]               Teleradiology is a fast emerging area in the field of healthcare. In teleradiology, cases are pulled from a remote location, readings are performed and results are pushed back to a remote location. In many cases, there is a need for the person who performs the reading to consult with an expert at the other end. Since the person is at a remote location, the communication happens in a non-coordinated fashion.

[0003]               Typically, the image data is pushed using a DICOM transfer. There is no automatic mechanism to ensure the successful transfer of images to the other side, by resending in case of failure etc. Further there is no way of knowing whether the expert is available for a discussion. The expert who needs to be contacted can be at any of his review stations. The requester will have to manually find out the review station's host details and perform a manual configuration, which is tedious and error prone.

[0004]               Additionally, the review at both sides happen as disjoint activities. The exact set of operations done at one end is not performed at the other end, which can lead to differences in what the two doctors see at their respective workstations. There is no synchronization. The only available mode of communication is over phone and email, which is time consuming, inefficient and error prone. Instant messaging systems require a centralized server to which individuals have to login. This can be a maintenance problem for the respective hospitals' IT departments.
